RICHMOND, VA --- The Richmond Flying Squirrels scored four times in the fifth inning and went on to a 6-1 win over the Thunder on Friday night at The Diamond.
Will Carter and Jordan Johnson each kept their opponent off-balance until Carter surrendered multiple runs in the fifth inning. Carter, who didn't allow his first hit until Ali Castillo singled with one out in the inning, saw the Squirrels score four times in the frame. With men on first and second, Ronnie Jebavy singled to right-center allowing Dillon Dobson to score. Jebavy, attempting to advance to second on the throw home slide in safely and as he did so, Ali Castillo scampered home to take a 2-0 lead for Richmond. The Squirrels would add two more in the inning on a double from Matt Lipka and a single from Luigi Rodriguez.
Carter would finish 5.2 innings for his longest start of the campaign. He was tagged with the loss on a night in which he allowed five hits and three walks and struck out three.
Johnson kept the Thunder off the board until Jhalan Jackson took him deep for a solo home run in the top of the seventh. Jackson is tied with Cavan Biggio of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats for the Eastern League lead with nine home runs on the season. Jackson's total is the most among New York Yankees minor leaguers.
The Squirrels added to their lead when Thursday night's hero, Dillon Dobson, hit a two-run home run off of Jose Mesa Jr. in the eighth inning.
Abiatal Avelino recorded his fourth multi-hit game with a three-hit effort to lead the Thunder offense. Trenton has suffered back-to-back defeats for just the third time this season, matching the longest losing streak for the team in 2018.
