Cam Gallagher's RBI single capped a four-run bottom of the eighth inning for the Omaha Storm Chasers, who rallied to defeat the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 5-4 on Wednesday night.
Sandy Alcantara pitched seven strong frames for the 'Cakes, holding Omaha to one run and four hits while stretching his streak to 24 2/3 innings without a walk before things unraveled in the eighth.
Alcantara loaded the bases with one out on a single sandwiched around a pair of walks, prompting Arnie Beyeler to bring in Severino Gonzalez. After Gonzalez (2-2) retired Adalberto Mondesi on a grounder to score the runner from third base, Frank Schwindel singled into left field to bring in two runs to tie the game.
A walk to Ryan O'Hearn was followed by Gallagher's single up the middle to plate Mondesi with the go-ahead run.
The Baby Cakes threatened in the ninth, capitalizing on a pair of Brandon Maurer two-out walks after a single by Cristhian Adames, but Maurer bounced back to strike out JT Riddle to end the game.
New Orleans finished 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, though the one hit was notable. With the bases loaded in the seventh and trailing 1-0, Jon Rodriguez's drive to left scraped over the wall for a grand slam, the club's first since Destin Hood's slam on Opening Day 2016, also at Werner Park.
Over the last four-plus seasons, New Orleans had allowed 20 grand slams while hitting just the one.
Omaha starter Scott Barlow had limited the 'Cakes to two hits over six shutout innings before serving up Rodriguez's blast in the seventh. Eric Stout (2-1) pitched a scoreless eighth and was credited with the win.
The Baby Cakes wrap up the four-game set in Omaha on Thursday at 6:35 p.m.
