BOWIE, Md. -- The Thunder overcame two deficits on Thursday night to win the series finale, 5-3, over the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Stadium.
For the third straight game, the Baysox (29-34) scored first. Loading the bases with none out against Thunder (39-26) starter Brody Koerner, Bowie designated hitter Ryan Mountcastle grounded into a double play, scoring Anderson Feliz, who had reached on an error by shortstop Gosuke Katoh.
Trenton immediately struck back in the top of the second off rehabbing Baltimore Orioles right-hander Gabriel Ynoa. After Chris Gittens singled and Billy Fleming reached on a fielding error by shortstop Erick Salcedo, Devyn Bolasky lined a double to left-center to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead.
Bowie, however, put their first two men on base in the bottom of the third, as Armando Araiza walked and Feliz was hit by a pitch. Corban Joseph hit a line drive off Gittens' glove at first base, and Araiza scored the tying run as the ball ricocheted into the outfield. Mountcastle plated Feliz from third on the next play with a groundout to second, putting Bowie back in front, 3-2.
With Christian Binford on the mound in relief in the top of the sixth inning, the Thunder got a leadoff single from Trey Amburgey, who advanced to third on a Katoh double. Gittens followed with a high line drive over the left field wall for a three-run homer, giving Trenton its second lead of the game.
In relief of Koerner, Stephen Tarpley retired all ten batters he faced, leaving with two out in the eighth inning. James Reeves retired the next two batters to preserve the lead, and in the ninth, after center fielder Jeff Hendrix lost a fly ball in the stadium lights, Reeves struck out Erick Salcedo looking to end the game.
Five Thunder players collected two hits each in the contest. The win gave the Thunder a three-games-to-one series victory, and their fifth win of the past seven games.
Your Thunder return home on Friday night at 7pm to open a three-game series against the Erie SeaWolves. RHP Dillon Tate (4-2, 3.43) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Sandy Baez (0-5, 4.42) will go for Erie.
