Despite a stellar start by Dillon Tate, the Thunder Pork Roll lost a lead in the late innings en route to a 5-4 loss to the Erie SeaWolves in front of a crowd of 6,120 at ARM & HAMMER Park on Friday night.
Tate struck out a season-high 10 batters over six and one-third scoreless innings for the Pork Roll (39-27) and received two runs of support, as Billy Fleming delivered a RBI-single for the game's first run in the third inning and hit a solo home run in the sixth.
But after SeaWolves (29-36) starter Sandy Baez limited the Pork Roll to the two runs over seven innings of work, Erie sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the eighth. Loading the bases with one out, the SeaWolves got a game-tying two-run single from Chad Sedio off reliever Justin Kamplain in his double-A debut. A walk then reloaded the bases, and Caleb Frare entered to pitch. Kenny Wilson hit a bloop double into right field to score two runs for a 4-2 Erie lead, and a late and errant throw to second from right field allowed an additional run to score on the play.
The Pork Roll rallied in the ninth inning off SeaWolves right-handers Mark Ecker and John Schreiber. Loading the bases with none out, Trenton inched one run closer on a run-scoring fielder's choice grounder by Gosuke Katoh, and Jhalan Jackson followed with a sacrifice fly to left field. But with the tying run on first, Rey Navarro struck out to end the game.
Your Thunder continue their homestand on Saturday night at 7pm against the SeaWolves. The Thunder have yet to announce their starting pitcher, and RHP Spencer Turnbull (3-5, 4.29) will go for Erie. The evening will feature a postgame Fireworks Spectacular, as well as Peanut-Free Night, presented by AUVI-Q. Tickets are available by phone at 609-394-3300 or online at TrentonThunder.com.
