BINGHAMTON, NY - Two home runs by Abiatal Avelino led an early offensive romp for the Thunder in a 10-3 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
After Devyn Bolasky led off the game with a single, Avelino put the Thunder (43-33) in an early 2-0 lead with a home run inside the left field foul pole. Gosuke Katoh drew a two-out walk two batters later and scored on a triple by Jeff Hendrix, who himself scored on a Mandy Alvarez double that followed.
In the top of the second, Jorge Saez led off with a walk ahead of Avelino's second home run in as many innings. The shortstop's two-homer game was the first multi-home run game of the season by a Thunder player, and the team's first since Jhalan Jackson homered twice on August 26, 2017.
Rumble Ponies (36-39) starter Marcos Molina settled down to hold the Thunder over his final three innings, while getting just one run of support on a John Mora RBI-single in the third inning.
Thunder starter Domingo Acevedo allowed just one run and finished his start on an outfield assist by Jackson that ended the fifth. With one out, Jackson caught a fly ball in right field and threw out Joey Terdoslavich at the plate, as the latter attempted to tag up and score from third.
Trenton rallied for three runs in the seventh against reliever Corey Taylor, getting an RBI-double from Ryan McBroom and a bases-loaded, two-run single from Jackson for a 9-1 lead.
David Sosebee struck out five over two innings of relief for the Thunder, but saw two unearned runs score off him in the bottom of the seventh on a throwing error by Avelino. James Reeves held the Rumble Ponies scoreless over the final two innings, including striking out the side in order in the ninth.
Your Thunder continue the series on Wednesday night at 6:35pm against the Rumble Ponies. RHP Brian Keller (5-5, 4.04) will start for the Thunder, and RHP Nabil Crismatt (8-4, 3.43) will go for Binghamton. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:20pm on 920 AM The Jersey and online www.TrentonThunder.com/Broadcast.
