Williamsport, P.A. - Taylor Lehman may not have earned the win, but his seven strikeouts over four shutout frames helped the Cutters earn the doubleheader split with West Virginia.
Lehman, who was supposed to follow Jose Conopoima in yesterday's game in a piggyback role, got the start in game two of the doubleheader thanks to yesterday's postponement. The 6'8" lefty answered the call by striking out seven batters and allowing just one hit and a pair of walks over four shut out frames.
The Crosscutters offense backed the start, plating a run in each of the first two innings, as Corbin Williams was plated by a Juan Aparicio single to right in the 1st inning and Seth Lancaster crossed home on a Julio Francisco RBI double to right-center in the 2nd.
Williamsport added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, with Aparicio on 3rd and D.J. Stewart on 1st, Stewart took off for 2nd base. Aparicio broke for the plate on the throw and was able to beat the errant throw to extend the Cutters lead to 3-0. Stewart advanced to 3rd on the error and was scored by a Seth Lancaster single to right, giving Williamsport a 4-0 advantage.
Jake Kinney and Abdallah Aris combined to throw three innings of shutout relief, striking out four batters and allowing just one runner to reach on a walk. Kinney earned the win, his first of the season with the Cutters.
Jose Conopoima got the start in the first game of the doubleheader, and made one mistake, giving up a two-out, two-run home run to Nick Patten in the top of the 3rd inning. Conopoima allowed two runs on four hits over 4.0 innings, striking out two and not allowing a walk in the loss.
Williamsport's offense as held to just two hit in the loss, going down on strikes 10 times.
The Crosscutters welcome in the State College Spikes for the only game of their three games series to be played in Williamsport. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
