Five Thunder Players Named 2019 Eastern League All-Stars

The Thunder, in conjunction with the Eastern League, are pleased to announce five Thunder players have been named to the Eastern Division roster for the 2019 Eastern League All-Star Game. The 2019 Eastern League All-Star Game will take place on Thursday, July 10 at The Diamond, the home of the Richmond Flying Squirrels. 

RHP Daniel Alvarez, RHP Deivi Garcia, INF Chris Gittens, INF Hoy Jun Park and OF Ben Ruta, have all been named All-Stars for the 2019 season.

The first All-Star selection in his career, Daniel Alvarez has appeared in 24 games for the Thunder going 5-1 with a 3.00 ERA and nine saves. Alvarez is tied for fourth in the Eastern League with nine saves and is tied for third in the league in strikeouts by a reliever with 44. Alvarez, a 22-year-old right-hander from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, signed as an international free agent in 2014.

Ranked as one of the top prospects in the Yankees organization, Deivi Garcia leads all MiLB starters with 15.1 K/9 and has struck out 100 batters in 59.2 innings this season. Garcia joined the Thunder on May 1 and struck out 11 New Hampshire Fisher Cats. In his most recent start at ARM & HAMMER Park, Garcia matched Adam Warren's franchise record of 15 strikeouts in a six inning start against the Richmond Flying Squirrels that a first half division title. Garcia, a 20-year-old, from Bonao in the Dominican Republic has been recognized as an All-Star for the first time in his career.

Infielder Chris Gittens has been one of the Eastern League's most valuable players with a league-leading .409 on-base percentage, and a team-high 11 home runs and 41 runs batted in. A 25-year-old infielder from Sherman, Texas who was recognized as an All-Star in 2015 and 2016 was selected in the 12th Round in 2015 out of Grayson Community College (TX). 

Hoy Jun Park has earned his second career All-Star selection by batting .278 with a .361 on-base percentage in 55 games with the Thunder. Park is tied for third in the league with four triples and ranks third on the Thunder in hits (58), stolen bases (10). The 23-year-old from Seoul, South Korea was signed by the Yankees as an international free agent in 2014. 

Outfielder Ben Ruta, a native of West Windsor, NJ, has been one of the Eastern Leagues top batters in 2019. Ruta ranks among the top-10 in the league in batting average (9th, .287), OPS (9th, .807), doubles (9th, 16), triples (2nd, 5), and stolen bases (T-5th, 13). Named an Organizational All-Star by MiLB.com in 2018, who Ruta has been recognized as a mid-season All-Star for the first time in his professional career, was selected in the 30th Round in 2016 out of Wagner College.
