Silver Hawks retire Haley's number
07/02/2010 12:45 PM ET
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Wednesday night at Coveleski Stadium started with a celebration but ended on a sour note. South Bend Silver Hawks manager Mark Haley's number 51 was retired before the game, but his team lost 15-3 to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The loss marks the largest margin of defeat for South Bend this season.

Haley is the fifth person to have his number retired by the South Bend franchise. After spending 1991, 1992 and 1995 as hitting coach for South Bend, Haley returned to the area in 2005 to manage the Silver Hawks and led the franchise to its third Midwest League championship. In his five-plus seasons as Silver Hawk skipper, Haley has amassed 408 wins in South Bend and is only 11 shy of reaching 500 for his Minor League career.

Haley joins the company of Jackie Robinson (42), Jim Reinebold (4), Rick Patterson (12) and Tony Franklin (18) by having his number retired in South Bend.

Reinebold was a long-time high school coach in the South Bend area before serving on the South Bend field staff from 1989 through 1995. Patterson managed the South Bend White Sox in 1989 and 1990, leading the franchise to its first championship in 1989. Franklin won a championship as skipper for South Bend in 1993.

The Silver Hawks opened a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) Thursday night at 7 p.m., with early Fourth of July Fireworks to follow. Silver hawks games are broadcast on 1620 ESPN Radio and at www.silverhawks.com online.
