Kolbrin Vitek is quickly putting his early-season struggles behind him. The former first-round pick tripled, doubled, scored twice and drove in a run for his fifth straight multi-hit game Friday as the Salem Red Sox held on for a 6-4 victory over the Potomac Nationals. Selected 20th overall in last year's Draft, Kolbrin went hitless in his first 11 at-bats of the season and was batting .148 after the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. He's been on a tear ever since. Against Potomac, the Ball State product delivered an RBI triple and scored in a three-run third inning, then doubled with two outs to spark a two-run fifth. Vitek took a called third strike in the sixth and walked in the eighth as he fell short of a fourth consecutive three-hit effort. But he raised his average to a season-best .354. The 2010 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year made his professional debut last summer in the short-season New York-Penn League and batted .270 with four homers, 30 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 56 games with Lowell. After a promotion to Class A Greenville, he hit .275 with three RBIs and four steals in 12 games. |
