Hens open 2012 season with 5-1 win!

The Hens bats were active early in the 2012 home opener against the Indianapolis Indians in front of a record breaking 13,227 people at Fifth Third Field on Friday evening. Toledo opened the new season with a 5-1 victory.

After first basemen Ryan Strieby knocked in two runs on a single up the middle in the first inning, third baseman Audy Ciriaco delivered the first home run of 2012 over the left field wall in the bottom of the second.

After three scoreless innings, catcher Omir Santos doubled to right field in the bottom of the sixth to score Jerad Head, giving Toledo a 4-0 lead.

One inning later, Head hit a grounder through Indianapolis shortstop Nick Evans' legs scoring another run for Toledo.

Starling Marte tripled in the top of ninth scoring the lone Indian run.

Winning pitcher Adam Wilk went five innings allowing just one hit and no runs in his first start of the new season for the Hens.

Indians starter Justin Wilson gave up three runs in five innings of work in the losing effort.

Brayan Villarreal and Chris Bootcheck took the mound in relief for the Hens, throwing a combined three scoreless innings.

Reliever Jose Ortega worked the top of the ninth clinching the Hens first win of the season.

The Indians and Mud Hens will play the second game of their three game series tomorrow at Fifth Third Field with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
