Mobile duo headlines Southern Stars 06/07/2012 5:50 PM ETBy Danny Wild / MLB.com
Southern League pitchers who've faced Mobile this season will have a familiar task on their hands on June 19: how do you stop Alfredo Marte and Matt Davidson? The BayBears duo lead the Southern League in home runs and were both voted to the South Division's All-Star roster on Thursday as the league unveiled it's participants for the 2012 Southern League All-Star Game, which is scheduled for June 19 in Tennessee. Marte, who leads the league with 13 homers, and Davidson, the D-backs' first-round pick from 2009 who ranks second with 12 longballs, headline a South squad that also includes Marlins catcher Kyle Skipworth and Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons, who is currently in the Majors.
Jacksonville will send four players to the South team, with outfielder Jake Smolinski and pitchers A.J. Ramos and Evan Reed joining Skipworth, the No. 6 overall pick in 2008. Ramos is one of two relievers earning All-Star honors as he's compiled a 3-0 record with an 0.92 ERA in 23 appearances this season. Reed, who is currently tied in saves with Mobile's Evan Marshall and Pensacola's Donnie Joseph, has saved 12 games for the Suns this season and boasts a 3-1 record with a 2.05 ERA. The host Smokies will send outfielder Jim Adduci, designated hitter Justin Bour and pitchers Frank Batista and Kevin Rhoderick on the North Division team. Jackson's Taijuan Walker, the Mariners' No. 2 prospect, joins Danny Hultzen, Seattle's No. 1 prospect, on a North pitching staff that also features Huntsville's Tyler Thornburg and Chattanooga's Ethan Martin. Mobile skipper Turner Ward will manage the South team while Tennessee's Buddy Bailey mans the North dugout. Full rosters for both teams are below:
