MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Why so serious? The Myrtle Beach Pelicans take off their regular home uniforms Thursday and trot out their newest specialty jerseys against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The Birds will wear, for one night only, Dark Knight uniform tops.
The Pelicans jerseys emulate the Dark Knight's actual suit, sporting a six pack of printed abs on the front. The numerals on the back are golden yellow with 'Pelicans' scripted along the front in the same color. As lifelike as the jersey's are, they will not, however, protect fans against the Scarecrow's fear gas, the Joker's dogs or whatever Bane and Cat Woman might throw their way.
"The jerseys are able to make a huge impact on a the night because they are one of the most looked at things in a ballpark," said Pelicans Director of Promotions Jen Borowski. "Plus it's fun to involve the players in theme nights."
During the Knight, fans have the opportunity to bid on the game worn uniforms. Winners have the chance to meet the players and get them to sign their jersey after the game. The money raised through the auction goes to the Bruce Dal Canton Scholarship Fund, helping provide scholarships for higher education to students in Grand Strand communities. Dal Canton was the first pitching coach in team history, serving until he lost a battle with cancer in 2008. The Pelicans clubhouse is named in his honor.
Fans are also encouraged to participate in the theme night, joining the Pelicans staff by dressing up as their favorite superhero. Costumes don't have to be limited to the Dark Knight and Batman. The Amazing Spiderman, Superman, Green Lantern, the Avengers, the Rocketeer, the red Power Ranger (we'll consider allowing the others) and more are welcome.
The specialty jerseys are the third worn by the Pelicans this season, following the Survivor's Weekend cancer awareness jerseys and those worn to salute the troops. The Birds have made national headlines in the past with their alternate jerseys, landing on USA Today's website for their Harry Potter tops last season.
"The Harry Potter jerseys last year were when we truly saw the impact that a specialty jersey can having on an evening," Borowski said. "I am looking forward to that same success with the Dark Knight jerseys."
