Minicozzi Named May Player of the Month

Portland, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Richmond Flying Squirrels infielder Mark Minicozzi has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of May. Mark batted .427 (44-for-103) with nine doubles, five home runs, 25 RBI, 26 runs scored, a .508 on-base percentage and a .660 slugging percentage in 27 games during the month for the Flying Squirrels. The 30-year old reached base in 26 of the 27 games he played in during the month and had at least one hit in 25 of those games. Those performances included a 15-game hitting streak from May 15th-30th and an on-base streak of 27 consecutive games from April 29th-May 30th. Minicozzi, who is a native of Wayne, Pennsylvania, led all Eastern League players in batting average (.427), runs scored (26), hits (44), on-base percentage (.508) and OPS (1.169) during the month of May. He also finished ranked among the monthly leaders in total bases (68-2nd), RBI (25-2nd), slugging percentage (.660-2nd), doubles (9-tied 3rd) and extra-base hits (14-tied 5th). Mark's performance was especially impressive for the week of May 20th-26th, when he was named the Eastern League Player of the Week after hitting .500 with nine RBI and nine runs scored. He followed his performance that week up by collecting multiple hits in each of his next four games, which included matching a career-high with four hits in a 13-2 win at Altoona on May 27th.

The 6'1", 210 lb. slugger raised his batting average over 100 points with his performance in May and he is currently hitting .347 this season, which leads the league. Minicozzi also ranks among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.433-3rd), hits (69-4th), OPS (.966-tied 4th), doubles (16-tied 5th), total bases (106-6th), runs scored (38-6th), slugging percentage (.533-7th), RBI (37-8th) and extra-base hits (23-tied 9th).

Mark was signed by the San Francisco Giants as a free agent in May of 2012 after spending the previous three seasons in independent baseball. He was originally drafted by the Giants in the 17th round of the 2005 draft out of East Carolina University.
