The Class A South Atlantic League announced the selections for its 2013 postseason All-Star team on Thursday, including the position of relief pitcher for the first time in the circuit's history.
Leading the All-Star squad is Asheville shortstop Rosell Herrera, who was named both Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Major League Prospect. The 20-year-old Rockies prospect leads the league in batting with a .343 average -- only three other hitters in the league are above the .300 mark, with none other higher than .314 -- and ranks second in both on-base percentage (.419) and OPS (.933). Herrera has hit 16 homers, driven in 76 runs and stolen 21 bases in 126 games for the Tourists.
The Most Outstanding Pitcher award went to right-hander Gabriel Ynoa of Savannah (Mets). The 20-year-old Dominican native's 14 wins lead the circuit, and he has fanned 105 batters while walking just 14 over 129 2/3 innings. Ynoa's 2.71 ERA ranks third in the league.
Tripp Keister of Hagerstown (Nationals) was selected as Manager of the Year after leading the Suns to a first-half Northern Division title. With five games remaining in the regular season, Hagerstown owns a 78-54 record, a half-game behind Augusta for the league's top record. Savannah pitching coach Frank Viola was named Coach of the Year.
Asheville and Hickory contributed three players apiece, West Virginia sent a pair and the remaining roster spots were filled by single players from Charleston, Greensboro, Hagerstown, Kannapolis, Lexington and Rome.
