Selected by Kansas City Royals out of Centennial High School (Corona, Calif.) in the 1st round (No. 4 overall) of the June 2000 First-Year Player Draft...signed June 7, 2000 by Gary Johnson...as the 4th overall selection, he became the highest draft pick in club history (KC also took pitcher Jeff Austin with the 4th pick in 1998)...was the first high school pitcher to be taken with the Royals 1st pick since Mike Jones was taken with the No. 21 overall selection in 1977...signed by the Royals to a Minor League contract on Oct. 30, 2007...drafted in 2000 as a pitcher, he made the switch to first baseman prior to the 2006 season and wound up being named to the 2006 California League All-Star team...graduated from Centennial High in 2000...was 10-0 with a 0.67 ERA as a senior, allowing 24 hits and 27 walks in 52 innings with 111 strikeouts...also hit a California Interscholastic Federation record 18 home runs in 2000 to move his 2-year total to 35.
