Attended Seminole HS (FL) where he batted .456 (37/81) with 32 RBI in 31 games as a sophomore. Son of longtime Angels' scout and minor league manager Tom Kotchman. Rated as Angels' top prospect by Baseball America in 2002, 2004 and 2005. Played for USA Junior National Team in 1998 that won World Championships, defeating Chinese-Taipei. Named Baseball America's top high school prospect in 2001. Gatorade National High School Player of the Year in 2001 as member of Florida's 5A state championship team. Originally signed by Angels' scout Tom Kotchman.
