Selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round of the 2002 Draft out of Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia... Melvin E. Upton, Jr... formerlly knwon as B.J, which stands for Bossman Junior, with his father, Manny, being the original Bossman... Upton's father starred in baseball and football at Norfolk State University. He has been a basketball referee in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the past 14 years, and in 2003 worked the NCAA Tournament's Sweet 16. BJ's mother, Yvonne, was a softball player and teaches physical education at Hickory High School in the Chesapeake, VA area...Is one of six Chesapeake, Virginia area high school products to be taken in the first round of the draft since 1997 joining 3B Michael Cuddyer (Twins, 9th player selected in 1997), P John Curtice (Red Sox, 17th player selected in 1997), 3B David Wright (Mets, 38th player selected in 2001), 3B Ryan Zimmerman (Nationals, 4th player selected in 2005) and B.J.'s younger brother Justin, who was the number one selection in the 2005 Amateur Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks out of Great Bridge High School... brother: B.J. was selected as the top 17-year-old prospect in the nation in 2002 by Baseball America and the top 19 year-old player in 2004. Justin was named the top high school prospect entering the draft and the 2005 High School Player of the Year by Baseball America. The Uptons and Youngs (Delmon and Dmitri) are the only brothers to be drafted in the top five picks of the Draft.
