Selected by the Washington Nationals in the first round (6th overall) of the 2007 Draft and received a .15 million signing bonus... debuted in 2007 with the Gulf Coast Nationals and Potomac Nationals before making his Major League debut that summer with an inning of relief against Atlanta on Sept. 7, 2007... returned to the Minors but eventually worked his way up through the entire Nat's system, returning to the Majors on May 18, 2009 against Pittsburgh... appeared in 15 games with Washington in 2009... underwent hip surgery due to a labral tear on Feb. 18, 2010 and was sidelined for three months... returned in June 2010 with Class A Advanced Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg... attended Wentzville Holt High School, in Wentzville, Missouri... lead the team to the State Championships both is junior and senior years... his mother, Gail Detwiler, is an English teacher at the school... pitched for Missouri State University of the Missouri Valley Conference... was a member of the 2006 All-MVC Tournament team... was the highest Missouri State draft pick in school history... has two older brothers... in three seasons at Missouri State University, went 11-11 with a 3.13 ERA (75 ER/216.0 IP) in 39 career games... fanned 10.2 batters per 9.0 innings during his career with the Bears... entered the '07 season as a Baseball America Pre-Season All-American... went 4-5 with a 2.22 ERA in 14 games in third and final season at MSU to garner 2nd-team MVC honors... as a sophomore, finished 7-4 with a 2.81 ERA, and tossed a complete game one-hitter to beat MVC-power Creighton on May 25 to garner Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week citation... was the second Missouri State Bear drafted in the first-round in as many seasons (RHP Brett Sinkbeil was FLA's top pick in 2006)... was a hospitality/restaurant administration major... played for Team USA in summer of '06 (2-0, 0.95 ERA)... upon completion of Team USA schedule, pitched in two games for Falmouth of the Cape Cod League... earned '04 Gateway Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors as senior at Wentzville (Mo.)
