Selected by the Chicago Cubs out of Valparaiso University in the 49th round of the June 2010 First-Year Player Draft. ... Shafer spent last season with the Rookie-level Arizona League Cubs, appearing in six games with no record, a save and a 1.80 ERA in six relief outings. ... Shafer picked up his first career save on Aug. 21 against the AZL Giants with two innings of work in which he allowed one hit and struck out one. ... He had a 1.00 ERA with four strikeouts in nine innings in away games, while holding right-handed hitters to a .095 batting average in 21 at-bats. ... In 2010 at Valparaiso, he fanned 121 batters in 105 2/3 innings, finishing six strikeouts shy of the school's single season record. ... In 2009, he was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-Horizon League selection after going 7-3 with a 3.59 ERA, striking out 79 batters in 85 1/3 innings with one complete game shutout. ... Shafer went 4-3 with a 2.64 ERA in 71 2/3 innings for the Wisconsin Woodchucks summer league team, and was named to pitch in the 2009 Northwoods League All-Star game.
