Edwin was born in Neu-Ulm, Germany, where his father, a cook in the United States Army, was stationed. He is one of 27 players in major league history to have been born in Germany, 2nd Devil Ray (LHP Steve Kent, 2002). Edwin moved to Columbus, Georgia at an early age, but had attended only two Major League games in person before making his debut on Sept. 9, 2003...EJ's first major league game was a Rays game he attended in 2001 at Tropicana Field while playing for the GCL Dodgers in Vero Beach.
