April 14, 2013

RENO, Nev.-Reno's Chris Owings went 4-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI, but the Aces fell 22-6 to the Sacramento River Cats on Sunday afternoon at Aces Ballpark.

Aces leadoff batter Didi Gregorius, on a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment with Reno, singled to start the bottom of the first. He was driven home on a single by Brad Snyder to give the Aces their first lead of the series, up 1-0.

Michael Choice hit his first of two homeruns of the game in the top of the second to tangle the score at one. Reno added two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead, but their luck stopped there.

Choice's second homer in the top of the fourth sparked a 10-run inning for the River Cats. The 10 runs tied a franchise high for most runs given up in an inning, which has happened two other times in Reno franchise history.

The Aces were unable to overcome the deficit, as Sacramento went on to score at least one run in the remaining five innings.

Evan Frey, Gregorius, Taylor Harbin, Owings and Mark Teahen each recorded a multi-hit game.

Stephen Vogt went 5-for-6 at the plate for the River Cats, with six RBI and four runs scored. He fell just a double short of the cycle, but recorded a solo homer and a grand slam. Choice went 4-for-5 with three RBI and five runs scored. Grant Green was the only Sacramento position player to not collect a hit.

RHP Nelson Figueora was charged with the loss, giving up 10 runs-nine earned-on 10 hits through 3.1 innings pitched.

The Aces bullpen gave up another 12 runs-11 earned-to set a new franchise high for most runs given up (previously 19 on July 4, 2012 at Colorado Springs).

Sacramento LHP Andrew Werner earned his first win of the season. Werner gave up six runs on 13 hits through 6.0 innings pitched. The Sacramento bullpen combined to shutout the Aces through the last three innings of the game.

The series wraps up on Monday night at Aces Ballpark. RHP Randall Delgado (0-1, 15.63 ERA) gets the nod for Reno, while the River Cats will counter with RHP Jesse Chavez (0-1, 2.38 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PT. Monday will be highlighted by the first Margarita Monday presented by Alice @ 96.5, featuring half-price margaritas.
