August 27, 2013

For Immediate Release
Aug. 27, 2013

ROUND ROCK, Texas- Reno Aces shortstop Chris Owings has been named the 2013 Pacific Coast League Rookie of the Year, marking the third-straight season an Aces player has garnered the honor, the league office announced today.

Owings, a native of Charleston, S.C., was voted the league's top rookie after a balloting of the PCL field managers and media representatives from across the league. He joins Colin Cowgill (2011) and Adam Eaton (2012) as recipients from Reno. Owings is the fourth player in D-backs Triple-A history to earn the award, with Josh Whitesell garnering the honor with the Tucson Sidewinders in 2008.

The 22-year-old has played in 118 games with Reno this season, and his .331 batting average is good for second in the league. He leads the PCL in hits (170), runs (97), and total bases (247), despite not playing in a game since Aug. 12, due to a hamstring injury. Additionally, Owings has 27 doubles, 12 home runs and seven triples to go along with 73 RBI and 16 stolen bases. His offensive numbers are impressive, but his glove is equally sound, as he leads all shortstops with 331 assists and is tied for fourth with 124 putouts.

Owings has shined the entire season, and yesterday it was announced he was named the shortstop for the All-PCL team. In addition to competing in the 2013 Triple-A All-Star Game at Aces Ballpark in July, he was an MLB All-Star SiriusXM Futures Game selection. In June, he became the first player in D-backs organizational history to be named the D-backs Organizational Player of the Month in three consecutive months. He also became the first player in Reno franchise history to have 40 or more hits in three consecutive month, knocking 40 in April, 44 in May and 45 in June to begin the 2013 campaign. On June 12, he became the first professional batter to reach the 100-hit plateau this season.

Selected by the D-backs in the 1st round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Gilbert High School, Owings carries a .291 average over five minor league seasons.

Reno is currently finishing up the 2013 campaign with an eight-game road trip. Ticket packages for the 2014 season are on-sale now at RenoAces.com, by calling (775) 334-7000 or by visiting the Aces Ballpark Ticket Office.
