RENO, Nev. - The Reno Aces battled the New Orleans Baby Cakes on Mother's Day from Greater Nevada Field in front of a crowd of 4,523. New Orleans' shortstop Isaac Galloway led the charge for the Baby Cakes, finishing the game 2-for-5 with two solo home runs. The Aces would score seven runs in the ballgame, but it wasn't enough to overcome nine runs by New Orleans.
Keyvius Sampson got the start for the Aces riding a three-game winning streak. New Orleans was patient early, benefiting from three Sampson walks and a two-RBI single from left fielder Moisés Sierra in the first inning. The right-hander would walk six total Baby Cakes in the game, four of them eventually coming around to score.
In the top of the third inning, 'Cakes second baseman Nick Noonan drew a walk. First baseman Brandon Barns would follow with a single to right field. With no outs and runners on the corners, Barns swiped second base off Sampson and catcher Ronnie Freeman. An errant throw by Freeman trickled into shallow center field allowing Noonan to come in to score and advance Barns to third base. Destin Hood drilled an RBI-double into center field to give New Orleans a 6-0 lead after two and a half.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Reno looked to repeat the magic from last night's six-run comeback performance. An Ildemaro Vargas three-run dinger, his second homer of the season, narrowed the New Orleans lead to 9-6 with one out. The six-run deficit entering the inning proved to be too much for the hot-hitting Aces as they would get just one more run before making the final out of the afternoon.
The loss brings Reno to a record of 22-14 on the season, two games back of the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division leaders.
