Luigi Rodriguez plated three and starter Thomas Pannone worked 6.1 innings, allowing only one run, helping Akron avoid the sweep to beat the Reading Fightin Phils 4-2 Thursday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
After Bobby Bradley was hit and Eric Haase drew a walk, with one out on a 2-2 count, Luigi Rodriguez hit his sixth home run of the year to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning.
Thomas Pannone surrendered his only run of the game in the first inning after giving up an RBI single to Carlos Tocci. Pannone pitched two perfect innings in the second and third innings. He escaped runners at the corners with two outs in the fifth, getting Scott Kingery to pop out to third. Pannone pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six hits, one earned run and a walk with six strikeouts, bringing his ERA down to 1.89. Cameron Hill relieved him with one out in the sixth. From there, Hill pitched two innings with two strikeouts, his only blemish being a solo homer in the ninth off the bat of Jiandido Tromp, his eighth. David Speer finished off the final two outs of the game on two pitches, collecting his third save of the year. Reading starter Drew Anderson went six innings, giving up six hits, four runs, all earned, two walks and two homers with five strikeouts.
Yu Chang tied up the game at one apiece with a leadoff solo homer to left field in the fifth. After Bradley and Haase reached in the sixth, Rodriguez made starter Drew Anderson pay, driving a three-run homer to right field. Rodriguez finished with two hits, a home run, a double and three RBI on the night. Along with Chang and Rodriguez, Bradley reached base twice on the night with a walk and a hit by pitch. The bottom five in the lineup consisting of Haase, Rodriguez, Chang, Connor Marabell and Jorma Rodriguez collected all seven hits for the Ducks.
With his 16th home run in the fifth, Yu Chang has hit at least one homer in back-to-back games for the fourth time this season… Dorssys Paulino replaced Jordan Smith in the lineup after Smith was ejected in the third following a called third strike. Paulino played in left field, with Rodriguez switching from left to right and Marabell shifting from right to center… This was Speer's first appearance back with Akron since being received from Columbus… Time of Game: 2:29… Attendance: 6,442.
