Altoona Offense Powers Onslaught Over Richmond on Saturday Night

The Curve score season high 11 runs on 18 hits to clinch series

RICHMOND, VA. – Rodolfo Castro blasted two home runs in a four-hit night, scoring four runners to lead the Altoona onslaught over Richmond, 11-2, on Saturday night at The Diamond.

The Curve (18-10) recorded 11 runs on 18 hits, a season-high in both categories. After a scoreless first two frames, Altoona scored all 11 runs from the third through seventh innings and picked up a hit in every inning but the ninth.

Castro broke open the scoring with a two-run home run off starter Phil Pfeifer (Loss, 0-1) in the third inning. His second blast closed the Altoona scoring in the seventh, another two-run shot off reliever Matt Seelinger. It was the fifth multi-homer game in Castro’s career and the 108th in Curve history.

Daniel Amaral led off the fourth inning with his second home run of the season. After a Raul Hernandez single and Osvaldo Bido reaching on a throwing error, Ji-Hwan Bae doubled to opposite field to score two. Bae finished with four hits in the contest.

Amaral also had an RBI-double in the fifth inning to score Cal Mitchell, who led off the inning with a double. Amaral finished with two hits and two RBI.

Altoona kept the offense alive in the sixth inning. Castro and Mason Martin both had base hits to lead things off.Flying Squirrels interim manager Jason Wood was ejected after arguing the call at first on Martin’s single with umpire Ben Rosen. Martin finished the game with three hits.

Brendt Citta then cleared the bases with a triple in the next at-bat and came across to score on a wild pitch from reliver Mac Marshall moments later.

Richmond would get a runner across in the bottom of the sixth inning after a fielding error from Citta in left field allowed Shane Matheny to score.

Oneil Cruz extended his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games in the win. He is the first Curve player this season to reach the threshold.

Altoona starter Osvaldo Bido (Win, 1-0) threw a season high 5.2 innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits and striking out a season-high eight batters. Cristofer Melendez made his Double-A debut for the Curve in relief, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings. John O’Reilly then closed the game on 2.0 innings pitched, allowing one unearned run in the ninth inning.

Pfeifer went 3.1 innings for Richmond (16-13) allowing five runs. Altoona then scored four runs off Marshall and two off Seelinger. Luis Amaya and Frank Rubio worked the final six outs of the game for the Flying Squirrels.

The Curve conclude their six-game series at The Diamond in Richmond, VA on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. RHP Jeff Passantino (0-1, 3.00) will make his fourth start of the season for Altoona, Richmond will start RHP Gerson Garabito (0-2, 5.49).
