Late Touchdown Lifts SeaWolves Over Curve Under Friday Night Lights

CURVE, PA – Cal Mitchell drove a single into center field to tie the game 5-5 in the seventh inning, but seven Erie runs in the ninth pushed the SeaWolves to a 12-5 victory on Friday night at PNG Field.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Jack Suwinski drew a walk to make it a 5-3 game. Mitchell then drove a 2-2 pitch to center field off Erie reliever Cale Coshow to score Ji-Hwan Bae and Mason Martin, tying the game at five. Mitchell finished the day with three hits and a walk.

The game remained tied until the ninth when Erie scored seven runs on five hits off Brad Case and Will Gardner. Case had thrown three innings allowing one run before the frame and allowed four runs on one out before Gardner entered. Daniel Cabrera and Drew Ward each hit RBI doubles while Eric De La Rosa scored two on a triple to left. Gardner allowed three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings.

Erie scored first in the third inning on a Cabrera inside-the-park home run. Later in the inning, Drew Ward singled on a ball to left and came all the way around to score on an error from Canaan Smith-Njigba to make it 3-0.

De La Rosa also hit an inside-the-park home run in the fourth inning off Curve starter Travis MacGregor. MacGregor allowed four runs on four hits in 5.0 IP. Ward hit a solo home run off Case to make it 5-0 in the sixth.

Altoona struck back for two in the sixth on a Suwinski RBI single. Altoona then loaded the bases and scored a second run on a Josh Bissonette RBI groundout. Bae extended his on-base streak to 20 games in the loss, one game shy of Oneil Cruz’s season high of 21 games. Connor Kaiser recorded three hits in the contest along with Mitchell.

Erie starter Beau Brieske allowed two runs in 5.1 innings of work, with five strikeouts and no walks.

The Curve continue their series with the SeaWolves on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. RHP Jeff Passantino (1-7, 4.76) will start for Altoona, with RHP Reese Olson (1-0, 3.14) slated for Erie.
