Amarillo Sod Poodles (24-29) | Wichita Wind Surge (30-23)

Amarillo, Texas — Bryce Jarvis stole the show in his HODGETOWN debut, striking out 11 batters over seven innings of work as he picked up his first Double-A win. The Sod Poodles improved to 24-29 on the season and took a 3-2 lead over the Wichita Wind Surge in the process.

Arizona Diamondbacks No. 8 rated prospect Bryce Jarvis made his HODGETOWN debut Saturday night in front of the sold out crowd of 7,103. Jarvis made quick work of the first nine batters he faced as he struck out six of them. The right-hander got through five innings on just 58 pitches - including a five pitch fourth - with only two singles allowed.

Conversely, Wichita starter Austin Schulfer was efficient in his own right. Schulfer came into the game without a run allowed in his last three starts (19.0 IP). He was through three and a third tonight before the Soddies broke through. A single off the bat of Stone Garrett gave the Sod Poodles their third hit of the night before Renae Martinez unloaded his third home run of the season 437 ft into left-center field as Amarillo jumped out 2-0.

Amarillo got back after it with their bats in the bottom of the fifth. A two out single was followed by an Alek Thomas walk and sent Luis Basabe to the dish. After battling to a full count and fouling off pitches to keep the at bat alive, Basabe finally got a pitch he could do damage with and hit a double into the left-center gap to score both runners on base.

Jarvis got back to work in the top of the sixth inning and gave up a solo home run to lead it off. Spencer Steer sat on a 1-0 breaking ball and gave the Wind Surge their first run of the night. Jarvis bounced back and picked up his ninth and 10th strikeout of the night, tying an Amarillo single-game high.

The Sod Poodles threatened to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases after a pair of singles and Geraldo Perdomo's team-leading 29th walk with two outs. A strikeout ended the threat and kept the Sod Poodles with a three run advantage.

With one out in the inning, Jarvis set the new franchise high when he struck out Andrew Bechtold giving him his 11th on the night. Matt Tabor had 10 strikeouts in his start on June 17th vs. Midland while Ronald Bolanos had 10 strikeouts on July 6, 2019 vs. Frisco.

Left-handed pitcher Mack Lemieux relieved Jarvis to begin the 8th inning and tossed a scoreless eighth. It is Lemieux's ninth scoreless game in 10 appearances since June 2nd (13.0 IP). Newly acquired RHP Keegan Curtis made his organizational debut after being traded from the Yankees to the Diamondbacks two days ago. Curtis was thrown into the fire right away, taking the ball in a save opportunity with Amarillo clinging to a three run lead in the ninth.

Curtis' first pitch of the night resulted in an out on the bunt attempt being popped up. The second out came on a hard lineout to Perdomo at shortstop and a lazy ground ball to first base would seal the deal and send the Sod Poodles away victorious for the second straight night.
