Jackets Fall in Low-Scoring Clash to Open Final Series
Pitchers Hold Firm on Both Sides as Wood Ducks Steal 2-1 Win
KINSTON, NC: The GreenJacket offense mustered just three hits in nine innings, and even a career-best start from Luis Arestigueta wasn’t enough to salvage the win, as Down East struck late for a 2-1 victory in the series opener.
Arestigueta worked a career-high six innings, flashing efficiency early and leaning on strong defense to carry him past his previous personal best in innings. Still at just 18 years old, Arestigueta worked back into the rotation after one game in the bullpen and continued to add intrigue to his future.
The GreenJacket offense was equally silent against lefty Thomas Ireland, who made his second appearance against Augusta this year and was equally dominant back at home. The ‘Jackets would find a way on the board first, as Junior Garcia roped a single in the 4th that scored John Gil from second, marking the only run of the day for the road side. Ireland would finish six innings for the first time as a pro, and tie his career-high with 8 Ks in a no-decision.
Arestigueta made just one true mistake in the game, and paid dearly for it. The righty hung a slider in the bottom of the 6th to Echedry Vargas, and the shortstop clobbered it beyond the left field fence for his team-high 14th homer of the year to tie the game. Arestigueta would finish the frame and cede the ball to Jacob Kroeger, who allowed five hits and two walks in less than two innings to take the loss.
Julian Brock played hero for the Wood Ducks in the 8th, sending a screaming grounder under the glove of Willmer De La Cruz at second base to score Vargas for the game-winning run. Luke Savage earned the win after a scoreless two innings, and Joey Danielson grabbed his first professional save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning as he continues his scoreless streak to start off his professional career.
The GreenJackets’ 2024 season is down to its final five games, all of which will be played at Down East against the Wood Ducks. Augusta has yet to release its rotation for the week, but do know they will face lefty Josh Trentadue tomorrow, who has a very high K-rate from the left side and looked sharp last time he faced the GreenJackets.
