PLAY-BY-PLAY

BROOKLYN, NY (May 13, 2025) – The Cyclones opened up their series with the Winston-Salem Dash with a 7-2 win on Tuesday night at Maimonides Park. Eight of the nine batters in the lineup collected at least one hit for the ‘Clones and RHP Brendan Girton (2-1) collected the win after 5.0 dominant innings on the mound.

The Dash wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Tuesday night, as RF Cole McConnell led off the game with a solo shot – the first of his career – to give Winston-Salem an instant 1-0 lead. But that would be all the offense they would be able to mount against Girton, as the right hander did not allow another hit over his 5.0 innings of work, striking out nine and walking a pair.

The Brooklyn bats got going in the bottom of the third, when LF Eli Serrano worked a one-out walk and advanced to third when RF A.J. Ewing roped a double to right field that put a pair of runners in scoring position for CF Carson Benge. The 2024 first-round draft pick took advantage of the scoring chance with a sac fly that knotted the score at 1-1.

An inning later, the ‘Clones would take the lead when 3B Jacob Reimer started the fourth with a double and came around to score on an RBI single from 2B Jesus Baez. The lead would swell to 3-1 in the fifth when Benge laced a triple that chased home Serrano, who started the inning with a walk. After Reimer walked to put runners on the corners, DH Marco Vargas roped an RBI single to center to plate Benge and Reimer would later score on a throwing error that made it 5-1 in favor of Brooklyn after five innings.

Winston-Salem cut into the lead with a run in the seventh to make it 5-2, but in the eighth, the Cyclones extended their lead. Jesus Baez got things started with a one-out single and Boston Baro followed with a walk. After C Chris Suero popped out on the infield for out number two, Estarling Mercado walked on four pitches to load the bases for Serrano. The former NC State standout turned around a 2-0 pitch for a two-RBI double that pushed the Brooklyn lead to 7-2.

RHP Chandler Marsh tossed a scoreless 9th to close out the win for Brooklyn.

The Cyclones and Tourists return to action on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. RHP RJ Gordon takes the ball for Brooklyn. He's expected to oppose Asheville LHP Christian Oppor (NR) in his SAL debut.
