Hillsboro, OR (July 4, 2022) - Jordan Lawlar , the Arizona Diamondbacks’ first round draft choice in 2021, has been promoted from Class A Visalia to High-A Hillsboro, the D-backs and Hillsboro Hops announced on Monday. Lawlar will be in the lineup for Hillsboro on Independence Day, batting second and playing shortstop. The Hops’ 7:05PM game Monday against Eugene (the San Francisco Giants affiliate) is sold out.
Lawlar, 19, was the sixth overall selection in last year’s draft following his senior year at Jesuit Prep High School in Dallas, Texas.
At the time of his promotion from Visalia, he was hitting .365, with an on-base percentage of .461 and a slugging percentage of .623. He had nine doubles, four triples and eight home runs at the Class A level, with 23 stolen bases in 27 attempts. A three-week stint on the Injured List from late May to mid-June left him just short of the required number of plate appearances to qualify for the league lead; otherwise, at the time of his promotion, he would be number one in the California League in batting average and on-base percentage, and would be second in slugging.
According to MLBpipeline.com, Lawlar is the #17 prospect in baseball, and #2 in the Diamondbacks’ chain, trailing only former Hop Corbin Carroll. Lawlar had been committed to play at Vanderbilt before signing with Arizona.
Since the Hops came into existence in 2013, 36 former Hops have advanced to the major leagues, including eight to make their major league debuts during the 2022 season.
Tickets are available for the remainder of the Hops’ series against Eugene, with games at 7:05PM Wednesday through Saturday, and at 1:05PM on Sunday. All Hops Friday night home games, including this Friday, July 8th, feature postgame fireworks.
All Hops games can be heard on Rip City Radio 620AM, and at www.RipCityRadio.com. All home games are televised on milb.tv, with a selection of games airing on Portland’s CW and KOIN-TV.
