TOLEDO, OH. – The Iowa Cubs crushed the Toledo Mud Hens 12-0 behind Ben Cowles and Kevin Alcántara combining for six RBIs in the victory.

After the first two innings were quiet for both teams, the I-Cubs came alive in the top of the third and fourth inning and scored the first eight runs of the game. This marks the first time this week the Iowa Cubs scored first this week.

Jonathon Long knocked in the first run for Iowa as he singled into right field and scored Matt Shaw for a 1-0 lead.

Heading into the fourth inning, the I-Cubs scored seven runs for a commanding 8-0 lead as James Triantos ripped his fourth double of the season into left field and scored Kevin Alcántara for the two-run lead. Reese McGuire singled in Greg Allen for another run. Shaw ripped his fourth double of the season into right field and scored Triantos, extending the lead to 4-0.

Continuing in the fourth, after Carlos Pérez drew a walk, Ben Cowles hit a slow-rolling single to third and beat the throw out to score McGuire for a five-run lead. Alcántara completed the seven-run inning with his ninth double of the season and cleared the bases, scoring Shaw, Pérez, and Cowles for an 8-0 lead in favor of Iowa.

Iowa added more damage in the top of the sixth inning as Cowles knocked in his second RBI of the game, scoring Long for a nine-run lead. Alcántara added his fourth RBI of the game as he grounded out but scored Pérez for another run. Allen singled into center field and plated Cowles for the third run of the inning. Triantos reached on a fielding error as he scored Allen for the commanding 12-0 lead.

Iowa’s pitching staff fanned 11 batters in tonight's 12-0 shutout victory. All the I-Cubs having at least one hit in the starting lineup in the win.

The Iowa Cubs continue this week’s series against the Toledo Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field on Friday, May 9 as first pitch is slated to start at 6:05 p.m. CT.
