Five-run fifth sinks Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After surrendering a five-run fifth inning, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Memphis Redbirds 5-3 Tuesday night at AutoZone Park.
Memphis (42-31) entered the fifth inning trailing by two runs. After getting the first out, Clint Coulter (2) blasted a solo home run off Jacksonville reliever Jeff Brigham (L, 3-3) to cut the deficit to 3-2. Evan Mendoza and Ben DeLuzio smacked back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Alec Burleson (16) launched a three-run home run lifting the Redbirds to a 5-3 lead over the Jumbo Shrimp.
The Redbirds took the early lead in the second inning. Luken Baker doubled with one out and scored on a single by Pedro Pages in the ensuing at-bat to put Memphis ahead 1-0.
Jacksonville (38-35) responded with a run in the third to tie the game. With two outs, Luke Williams walked, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Joey Wendle singled, scoring Williams from third to tie the game.
The Jumbo Shrimp took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning. With two outs, JJ Bleday singled and scored on a double from Ryan Lavarnway to put Jacksonville ahead 2-1. Charles Leblanc followed with a double to score Lavarnway and give the Jumbo Shrimp a 3-1 advantage.
