PAWTUCKET, RI - After close to three months running the team’s wildly popular “McCoy Stadium Dining on the Diamond,” the Pawtucket Red Sox today announced the expansion of this outdoor dining concept and the forthcoming debut of the program at one of the game’s most iconic shrines, the Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville, Iowa.
As part of a unique partnership between the Field of Dreams site’s operator, Go the Distance, LLC, and Diamond Dining, LLC, a sister company of the PawSox promoting this outdoor hospitality concept in other well-known venues, “Field of Dreams Dining on the Diamond” will debut on the weekend of September 11-12, then continue on several weekend nights throughout the months of September and October this fall.
Dining on the Diamond has already proven an enormous success in Pawtucket, with close to 6,000 guests enjoying a meal on McCoy’s lush outfield, choosing from a signature menu of items including ballpark staples like hot dogs, burgers, and chicken tenders, as well as other popular items such as steak tips, barbecue platters, and lobster rolls. The team plans to continue hosting McCoy Dining on the Diamond in the coming weeks, with a waiting list of close to 3,700 total groups, and several new dates to be announced shortly.
Dyersville has been a popular tourist destination in the years since the 1989 debut of the famous film starring Kevin Costner, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, Amy Madigan, Burt Lancaster, and Dwier Brown. The site has chartered new paths recently under the leadership of Go the Distance CEO Tom Mietzel, including Major League Baseball’s construction of an 8,000 person ballpark adjacent to the site’s main field that will play host to an MLB game next summer in Iowa, and exciting plans for youth baseball tournaments bringing teams from across the country to Dyersville in the years to come.
Field of Dreams Dining on the Diamond will take place on the outfield of the site’s main field, where much of the beloved movie was filmed. Reservations for the opening weekend can now be made by visiting www.diningonthediamond.com or by calling 563-823-8374. Field of Dreams Dining on the Diamond will feature a similar menu to that of its Pawtucket counterpart, along with some special touches unique to its new Midwest location, and will offer additional surprises and guest appearances for fans making the pilgrimage to this one-of-a-kind location. Designed by award-winning PawSox Executive Chef Tom Whalen, the Dyersville menu will include a pork tenderloin sandwich with fries, an Iowa pork chop plate, and sweet corn on a stick, all in addition to Diamond on the Dining’s core menu. A complete menu, along with upcoming dates for the program, is attached.
"Our founder Denise Stillman had a dream of preserving this special place,” said Go the Distance CEO Tom Mietzel, who was married to Stillman until her passing in 2018. “She worked tirelessly to provide a special place for all to enjoy. She would have loved Dining on the Diamond and our team is honored to be working with this incredible event." Stillman led a group that purchased the Field of Dreams site in 2012, and her legacy remains strong today as Mietzel and Go the Distance lead the site in new and exciting directions.
“We could not be more pleased to expand Dining on the Diamond to the Dyersville, Iowa site that spawned one of the greatest sports movies ever made,” said Dan Rea, PawSox EVP of Business Affairs and Real Estate Development, who along with veteran restaurateur Jason Emmett will help lead this new venture. “In particular, we are grateful to Tom Mietzel for his vision and partnership, and to the dear memory of Denise Stillman, which have allowed us to bring a little bit of our Dining on the Diamond excitement out to the Field of Dreams location that’s been such a big part of baseball’s past, present, and future.”
