RENO, Nev. – Coming out of the All-Star break, the Reno Aces (4-14, 41-52) will begin a quick three-game weekend series against the Albuquerque Isotopes (6-11, 37-54), the Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
This will be the third series the Aces and Isotopes face-off with the two previous meetings happening at Greater Nevada Field. The BLC-Nine are 7-5 against Albuquerque in their 12 contests this season but have been outscored 89-80.
Reno is coming out of the break following a series loss to the Tacoma Rainiers, triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, dropping five of the six games. Dylan Ray was the highlight of week, firing six shutout innings in a game three victory earning him earning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors. On the offensive side, Jorge Barrosa ran his hit streak up to 29 games before it came to an end, the longest in all of affiliated baseball this season.
Albuquerque is coming off a series at Round Rock before the break where they won two of five games with the sixth being postponed due to rain. In a tightly contested series, three games were decided by one run and the biggest score differential was a four-run Round Rock win in the Saturday game.
Albuquerque’s roster includes six of the Rockies’ top 30 prospects, including their No. 6 overall prospect, Zac Veen. While he posted a lowly .591 OPS in five games against the Aces earlier this season, he has been red hot in the second half with a .438/.486/.625 slash line, good for a 1.111 OPS in 16 games. In that span, he leads the Isotopes in hits, runs, doubles, RBI and total bases.
Recently promoted Braiden Ward is another name to look out for in the ABQ lineup this weekend. Since his call-up on July 1, the speedy outfielder is hitting .412 with a team-leading .545 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases. The 26-year-old was sporting just a .693 OPS with Double-A Hartford but has found a ton of success since his promotion.
On the Aces’ side, Seth Brown has been the most feared hitter in the lineup since his arrival. In eight games this month, he leads the team in average (.382), on-base percentage (.462), slugging percentage (.765), OPS (1.2227) and home runs (4). Starting the year with the Las Vegas Aviators, the 33-year-old veteran has multiple hits in 14 of his 17 PCL games, including five already with Reno.
The series in Albuquerque begins Friday at 5:35 p.m. PT (6:35 p.m. MT) at RGCU Field at Isotopes Park.
