RENO, Nev. – The Reno Aces (27–30) split the first leg of their two-week road trip with the Round Rock Express (27–30), the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, during a competitive six-game series this past week at Dell Diamond.
It was a back-and-forth battle between the two clubs. Reno earned its first win of the series on Wednesday with a 5–4 victory, powered by a dominant performance from left-hander Tommy Henry. The southpaw tossed six strong innings, allowing just one run while striking out five and issuing no walks. The Aces jumped out to an early lead, plating five runs over the first four innings. However, they had to hold off a late rally, as the Express scored three runs across the final two frames. Christian Montes De Oca was called upon to shut the door and faced a high-pressure situation with the tying run just 90 feet away and two outs in the ninth. He rose to the occasion, striking out the final batter to seal the win and snap a four-game losing streak for Reno.
Bryce Jarvis turned in a spectacular performance in Friday’s 6-5 win, tossing six no-hit innings while allowing just one walk and striking out a season-high nine. The right-hander’s outing led the Aces to their second win of the series and earned him Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors. Round Rock made things interesting again in the ninth, scoring two runs to cut Reno’s lead to one. John Curtiss came in with two outs and successfully closed out the game. Offensively, Tristin English led the charge with three hits and RBI singles in both the fifth and eighth innings.
Reno’s final win came in Sunday’s series finale, capped by a dramatic seven-run outburst in the eighth inning. The Aces had been held scoreless through the first seven innings and trailed by two entering the eighth. Jorge Barrosa and Jordan Lawlar sparked the rally with back-to-back hits, setting the table for English, who tied the game with a double down the left-field line. From there, the offense erupted. Blaze Alexander and Cristian Pache delivered RBI singles, and Lawlar blew the game open with a two-run single to extend Reno’s led to five, putting the contest out of reach.
Tristin English had an outstanding series at the plate, going 8-for-24 (.333) with four doubles and six RBI. The Georgia Tech product has been red-hot since returning from the injured list on May 22, batting 13-for-36 (.361) with five doubles, one home run, and eight RBI. He enters the upcoming series against Oklahoma City carrying a strong .361/.378/.583 slash line.
The Aces will continue their two-week road trip as they head to Oklahoma City to face the Comets, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The six-game series begins on Tuesday, June 3, with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 p.m. PST.
