O'Brien's second honor of the season as the league's top-pitcher came five weeks after his first as the righty took home the first award of the season for the Appalachian League. Princeton's ace compiled a 0-0 record with a clean 0.00 ERA during his one-start, five-inning effort against Danville on August 1.
During the contest, the 6-4, 170-pount pitcher allowed only one hit while striking out seven batters and allowing only two walks during the Rays' 3-0 shutout loss. O'Brien allowed only one of the six hits on the night Bluefield tallied in the win.
The pitcher generated an 0-0 record without allowing a run in two appearances in week one to gain the honor. Princeton now has three Pitcher of the Week tallies for the 2017 season as O'Brien has taken home two and Tyler Day was week four's winner.
So far into the 2017 campaign, O'Brien owns a 0-0, 1.05 ERA in 25 2/3 innings pitched over the course of seven games. The righty showcases an impressive 25/8 SO/BB ratio on the year.
Johnson City's Bandes also collected his second Appalachian League honor this season as the league's top-hitter. The slugger slashed a .476/.522/.1.048 line after going 10-for-21 at the plate with four home runs, nine RBIs, five runs scored and three walks overall in five games on the week.
The first baseman/designated-hitter for the Red Birds drove in three runs on two separate occasions (vs. Princeton on Aug. 3 & vs. Kingsport on Aug. 6) and has homered in three of his last four ballgames. During the week, Bandes's good play attributed to a 3-3 record for Johnson City who is eyeing a playoff spot in the West as the season begins to wind down.
Bandes, who stands in at 6-1, 200-pounds, also took home the honor as the league's top-hitter following week three of action when the Cardinal slugger hit .480 with three homers and 11 RBIs during the week. On the season, the two-time Appalachian League Offensive Player of the Week is totaling a .339 average with seven home runs and 32 RBIs.
Week seven of the award is the first time this season the Appalachian League has seen two reoccurring players on the list simultaneously.
Stay tuned in for week five Appalachian League Players of the Week that are set to be released next Monday, August 14.
