ASHEVILLE- Emotions were at an all-time high on Wednesday night with the Asheville Tourists fighting to stay in first place and the Charleston RiverDogs fighting for their playoff lives. The Tourists came out on top 8-5 and snapped a three-game home skid in the process.
Both teams were scoreless in the first frame but Danny Edgeworth put Asheville on the board in the second. The Tourists infielder hit a two-out RBI single to centerfield to make it 1-0. The next batter, Cade Harris , crushed a three-run Home Run to give Asheville a four-run frame.
Charleston immediately answered with one in the third and another in the fourth. The RiverDogs had a chance to plate more in the fourth inning after a wild sequence of events.
The bases were loaded with two outs when starting pitcher Nick Bush appeared to strikeout out Eduardo Torrealba on a swinging strike three to end the inning. Torrealba was ruled to have not broken the plane and Robinson Cancel came out to calm down his pitcher. However, the Tourists had already used a mound visit in the inning and Bush was forced to depart.
Raymells Rosa came in with no warm up time and had to deal with a full count and the bases loaded. Rosa struck out Torrealba to end the threat. The Tourists were angry and it showed in the bottom of the fourth. John Cresto ripped an RBI double down the left field line and Niko Decolati plated two more with a single back up the middle.
The RiverDogs cut the lead to 7-4 with two runs in the fifth but Rosa dialed in. Asheville added another run on Decolati's RBI triple in the sixth. The Tourists bullpen kept the RiverDogs quiet but in the bottom of the ninth the visitors brought the tying run to the plate. PJ Poulin came on and notched the game's final out for his 11th save of the season.
The Tourists will finish out their 2019 regular season home slate on Thursday night with a 7:05pm first pitch. Asheville and Augusta remain tied for first with five games left to play. Charleston is now four games back of both teams.
