AUBURN, NY - After a loud night offensively on Wednesday, the Doubledays bats were quiet Thursday as the Tigers' lefty from Down Under, Jack O'Loughlin, mowed down Auburn's bats in six innings of work. The Doubledays dropped game two, 8-3, after a late-inning push by Connecticut.
Auburn starter Nelson Galindez struggled to find a groove in his three innings of work, allowing three runs on six hits during his three innings of work. A leadoff double in the second inning came around to score on a groundout, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch brought in the Tigers' second run in the third. A force out at first base gave Connecticut a 3-0 lead.
The Doubledays were given plenty of second chances as the Tigers committed an unsightly five errors on the night. Auburn's first base runner of the game was Caldioli Sanfler, who reached first base on an O'Loughlin throwing error to lead off the first inning. Sanfler swiped second and reached third on yet another throwing error, but was stranded after Drew Ward struck out and Wilmer Perez grounded out to first base.
Connecticut's third and fourth errors of the night resulted in Auburn's first run of the contest. Sanfler struck out swinging in the fifth inning but reached base on a throwing error by catcher Cooper Johnson. He later came around to score on an errant pickoff attempt once again by Johnson.
One of Auburn's two runs in the seventh inning came as a result of a fielding error by third baseman Hector Martinez. His throwing error put Jack Dunn at first base and J.T. Arruda at second for Anthony Peroni, who moved both runners over on a sacrifice bunt. Landerson Pena walked to load the bases, and a single to right field by Sanfler brought in the Doubledays' second run of the night. A bases loaded walk tied the game, 3-3, but couldn't push any more across as Wilmer Perez grounded out to end the inning.
Auburn's inability to further capitalize in the seventh came back to haunt it as new pitcher Tyler Yankosky allowed five runs (four earned) over the game's last two innings. After retaking the lead in the eighth inning on a fielder's choice, the Tigers loaded the bases in the ninth and scored two on a throwing error by Yankosky. Two more scored on a Cooper Johnson single to give the Tigers an 8-3 lead.
