The Doubledays delivered big time in their last regular season game at Falcon Park. In front of a lively crowd of over 1,300, the Doubledays launched two home runs in their series finale against the Williamsport Crosscutters and secured the 6-2 win.
Nic Perkins - playing first base tonight for the Doubledays - kicked off Auburn's scoring with a bang in the second inning. He didn't miss a beat leading off the inning, blasting his third home run of the season over the left field wall on the very first pitch he saw. His homer only added to his hot week at the plate, where he now has 10 RBI over his past five games.
On the mound, Doubledays starter Niomar Gomez electrified the lively Falcon Park crowd with four innings of one-run ball. Gomez struck out six - tying a season high - while working his way through four hits, with his only hiccup on the night coming in the third inning when a leadoff walk came around to score to tie the ballgame.
That hiccup, however, was quickly forgiven in the home half of the inning. A leadoff single and two straight wild pitches off of Crosscutters starter Ben Brown put Cole Daily on third base, and a fielding error by second baseman Seth Lancaster brought him in to score. The Doubledays knocked him out of the game after only 2.2 IP after loading the bases and scoring on yet another wild pitch.
The Doubledays tacked on another run in the sixth and two in the seventh, highlighted by a monster home run by left fielder Pablo O'Connor. It was Pablo's fifth home run of the season and second of the series against the Crosscutters, the first coming on Thursday night and going opposite field.
Auburn's bullpen continued where Gomez left off in the sixth inning and continued to blank the Crosscutters throughout the night. Chandler Day continued his dominance in relief and tossed three innings of perfect baseball. After giving up seven runs on July 18, Day owns a 1.13 ERA with a WHIP of 0.88 and continues to be one of the Doubledays' best assets in long relief.
Ryan Tapani relieved Day in the ninth, and while the Crosscutters were able to push a run across, Auburn's lead was ultimately too great to overcome. With the Doubledays' 6-2 win and the Brooklyn Cyclones' 4-1 loss to the Hudson Valley Renegades, Auburn now owns sole possession of the wild card with three games in Batavia to go.
The Doubledays will be back in action Saturday at 1:05 PM against the Muckdogs.
