June 5, 2019

Asheville, NC: In another one-run game between the GreenJackets (29-30) and the Asheville Tourists (25-34), the GreenJackets could not complete the series sweep on Wednesday night, as Asheville got a walk-off single from Will Golsan to win it by a final of 4-3.

Asheville, NC: In another one-run game between the GreenJackets (29-30) and the Asheville Tourists (25-34), the GreenJackets could not complete the series sweep on Wednesday night, as Asheville got a walk-off single from Will Golsan to win it by a final of 4-3.

The GreenJackets will end the road-trip with a 5-2 record. The last eight-games the Jackets have played in have been decided by 11 total runs. The loss for the Jackets, combined with the win for the Charleston RiverDogs, will put the Jackets three games back of 1st place with 11 games to go in the 1st half of the season.
With Colten Schmidt on the mound for the Asheville Tourists, the GreenJackets knew they had their work cutout for them. Schmidt came into the game with 19-straight innings of scoreless baseball and would extend that streak to 24.1 innings as he went 5.1 frames of scoreless baseball for Asheville.
The Tourists struggled with GreenJackets starter Keaton Winn for the first 3.2 innings, but they would score twice with two outs in the 4th. After a Coco Montes infield hit, followed by a double for Danny Edgeworth, it was a two-RBI single for Asheville's Johnny Cresto to make it a 2-0 lead for the home team.
Asheville scored another run off of Winn in the 5th inning. This time, it was a Niko Decolati triple to extend the Tourists lead to 3-0. The GreenJackets finally were able to break through in the 7th inning. After they left the bases loaded in the 6th inning, the Jackets scored their first run after an error from the right fielder Decolati on a single that he just could not field cleanly on the outfield grass.
The Augusta offense scored two more in the inning on back-to-back singles from Jacob Gonzalez and Dalton Combs, and the Jackets were able to even the score at three.
Keaton Winn went six innings on the mound for the Jackets, as he allowed just three runs. He would strikeout five and walk three.
In the 9th inning, the Tourists got a leadoff double from Cresto. He would advance to 3rd base on a fly-out from Cade Harris, and it was Will Golsan with a walk-off single on a groundball down the 3rd baseline to win it for Asheville, a final of 4-3.
Player of the Game: Jacob Gonzalez, 2-4, RBI, BB
Jacob Gonzalez has gotten off to a great start in the month of June. He had his 3rd straight multi-hit game on Wednesday, and he is 7-16 (.438) to start off his first four games this month.
Tomorrow's Game:  7:05 PM vs Kannapolis Intimidators (Chicago White Sox), SRP Park, North Augusta, South Carolina
Pitching Matchup: (KAN) TBD (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs (AUG) RHP Keaton Winn (2-4, 4.31 ERA)
Blake Rivera will open things up on the mound for the GreenJackets in a crucial home series with the Kannapolis Intimidators. Rivera is coming off a performance in Columbia on June 1st where he allowed three runs over five innings of work. He struck out six, while walking only one batter for the evening. Rivera has thrown 43.2 innings on the hill this year for the Jackets, and he is listed as the #18 prospect in the San Francisco Giants organization according to MLB.com. Rivera was a 4th round selection from Wallace State Community College in the 2018 MLB Draft. He was also selected by the Giants in 2017 in the 32nd round, but decided to head back to school. The Giants drafted him again the following year but this time 28 rounds earlier.
