Charleston Hands Augusta Fifth Straight Defeat

Riverdogs Pitching Dominates Again

CHARLESTON, SC: The pitching of the Charleston Riverdogs (26-12) was again the story on Saturday night at Joseph. P Riley Jr. Ballpark as they silenced the Augusta GreenJackets (20-18) 5-1.

Augusta garnered some early momentum by scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Geraldo Quintero to score Caleb Durbin, giving the GreenJackets a quick 1-0 advantage.

The Riverdogs, however, needed just the next half-inning to get that back and then some as Carson Williams tripled in Shane Sasaki to even the score, and then on a groundout by Abiezel Ramirez, Williams scored to put Charleston in front 2-1.

In the third, the Riverdogs used the long ball to tack on another run as Bobby Seymour went yard to up the Charleston lead to 3-1.

Charleston added two more insurance runs in the sixth inning on back-to-back bases-loaded walks to increase the lead to 5-1.

The GreenJackets were stymied by the Riverdogs hurlers once again as they were unable to get anything going the rest of the night with the three pitcher combination of Neraldo Catalina, Austin Vernon, and Jack Snyder held the Augusta bats in check by allowing just five hits, helping Charleston fend off any comeback effort, leading them to the 5-1 win, handing Augusta their fifth straight loss in the process.

Austin Vernon was the winner for the Riverdogs in relief with AJ Smth-Shawver taking the loss for the GreenJackets.

Caleb Durbin reached three times on Saturday, scoring the only Augusta run in the first inning while Brandol Mezquita extended his on-base streak to 29 games with his 14th multi-hit game of the season to showcase the offensive standouts from Saturday.

The series in Charleston concludes on Sunday evening at 5:05 pm with J.J. Niekro set to make his first start of the season against Ben Peoples for the Riverdogs.
