Fifth Third Bank Takes A Swing Against Cancer

Bank Teams up with MiLB & Local Fans to Fight Cancer
August 11, 2016

AUGUSTA - Fifth Third Bank Georgia, the Augusta GreenJackets and the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University will soon step up to the plate to help fight cancer when the Bank hosts a special Stand Up To Cancer Night with the GreenJackets on Saturday, August 13, 2016. Tickets can be purchased at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com/tickets.

Fifth Third will offer fun, interactive fan activities during the game as part of the bank's ongoing commitment to raise awareness and contributions to support cancer research. Among the in-game promotions planned include a $530 donation that the bank will make for every strike out that a GreenJackets pitcher accomplishes during the game. Fifth Third will also donate $1 to SU2C when fans share eligible posts using the #howifight hashtag on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Vine, up to $500,000 during the promotion period.*

Lake Olmstead Stadium will also feature a very special placard tribute moment. Stand Up to Cancer placards will be handed out as attendees enter the gates and everyone is encouraged to fill out the placard denoting who they "stand up for" in the fight against cancer. Georgia Cancer Center patients and staff will be in attendance, joining bank employees for the first pitch and placard moment.

"We invite those touched by cancer to come out to the ballpark and enjoy this special event with us," said Regional President Hal Clemmer, Fifth Third Bank Georgia. "To use some familiar baseball phrases, our goal, is to get 'ahead in the count' against cancer. Stand Up To Cancer's teams of researchers and scientists have been able to make significant scientific breakthroughs in cancer research and with the help of the Augusta GreenJackets, the fans, and Fifth Third customers, we can hope to get one step closer to 'striking out' this disease once and for all."

Since teaming up with SU2C in 2013, Fifth Third has helped raise more than $6.3 million in donations for the organization. This year's promotion runs through December 31, 2016.   In the U.S., one in two men and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetimes, according to statistics collected by the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results program at the National Cancer Institute.

"Fifth Third Bank is a great community leader and we are excited to join with them to Stand up to Cancer at the Lake," stated GreenJackets General Manager Tom Denlinger. "This will be a night to remember and we invite the CSRA to come out and take part."

"The awareness raised at events like this is one of the more powerful tools we have in fighting cancer," said Dr. Samir N. Khleif, director of the Georgia Cancer Center. "It not only allows us to educate people in the innovative research being done and clinical treatments available at the Cancer Center, but it also give us an opportunity to deliver an extremely important message of prevention."

Stand Up To Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is a breakthrough initiative that raises funds to accelerate innovative cancer research, enabling scientific collaboration in order to get new therapies to patients quickly. Fifth Third supports this collaborative approach and is committed to finding different ways to improve people's lives and better our communities. As such, Fifth Third began working with SU2C in 2013 when the Bank introduced its Fifth Third SU2C debit and credit cards, which raise funds to support SU2C research through every qualifying purchase made using those cards. Fifth Third Bank is the only card issuer to offer the SU2C payment cards. Visit 53.com/su2ccards for full details.

*$1 donation to SU2C for every eligible use of the hashtag #howifight on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vine, up to a maximum donation of $500,000 from now through December 31, 2016. Only one use of the Eligible Hashtag per username, per Monitored Social Media Site, per day during the Promotion Period will be considered an eligible use.
