Fireflies Hang On For 5-4 Victory

Columbia, SC – Bryson Horne hit his first professional home run, but the GreenJackets fell short on Thursday to the Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City Royals), 5-4. Augusta outhit Columbia 11-6, but committed two errors.

Augusta is now 1-2 on their 12-game road trip and they fall seven games back of the Charleston RiverDogs in the standings.

Horne’s solo home run came in the 2nd inning, but the Fireflies scored four runs in the third inning and batted around. GreenJackets starter Tanner Gordon earned the loss after 2.2 innings allowing four runs and three earned runs.

Columbia added an important insurance run in the fifth inning. Darryl Collins hit a solo home run to make it 5-1.

Landon Stephens smashed a solo shot in the 6th. Stephens finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Vaughn Grissom doubled in the seventh to drive in two, and an error on the play allowed a third run to score. Augusta trailed just 5-4.

Gabriel Rodriguez entered and posted his best performance of the year. He’d strikeout six over two innings out of the bullpen, but the GreenJackets went down in order in the ninth inning.

• Landon Stephens is slashing .294/.351/.549 in the month of June.
• Cade Bunnell walked again on Thursday. His 33 walks are now tied for first in the Low-A East.
• Braulio Vasquez stole another base. He has 25 this season to lead the Low-A East.
