GreenJackets score eight runs in the first inning

North Augusta, SC – Nobody at SRP Park on Friday night liked how the Columbia Fireflies (Kansas City Royals) celebrated their eight-run 4th inning. On Saturday, the GreenJackets got their revenge.

An eight-run 1st inning, highlighted by Willie Carter’s towering three-run home run, helped the Jackets get back above the .500 mark.

The GreenJackets finished with 18 hits and it was Carter who went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Ricardo Rodriguez was a triple shy of the cycle and went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Seven GreenJackets had multi-hit nights.

Joey Estes came out and shutdown the Columbia bats. 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball including six strikeouts. The first inning run support certainly helped his cause. Every GreenJacket reached base in the first inning as it was eight hits and one hit batsmen to start the ballgame. Vaughn Grissom singled to score a run making it 1-0. Then Carter came up later with his home run to give the Jackets a 4-0 lead.

Ricardo Rodriguez, Cody Birdsong, and Cam Shepherd all added RBIs in the 1st. In the 2nd inning Bryson Horne got in on the act with an RBI knock to make it 9-0.

Willie Carter continued with his hot streak in the 3rd. A single scored another to make it 10-1. In the 5th inning, Vaughn Grissom’s sacrifice fly made it 11-1.

Columbia got a run back in the 6th, but it was Rodriguez with his first long ball of the year in the bottom of the inning, to make it 12-2. Rodriguez then doubled home a run in the 8th to make it 13-2.

Peyton Williams earned the win for the GreenJackets going three innings of scoreless baseball and striking out four.
