Rome stymies Jackets offense for 3-1 victory

GreenJackets score just one run in the 1st inning and now look for series split tomorrow
May 23, 2019

North Augusta, SC: The GreenJackets (23-23) offense was unable to produce enough runs as they left 10 men-on-base, and they fell in the 3rd game of the series to the Rome Braves (23-24) by a final of 3-1. The Jackets will return tomorrow and try to earn a series split

North Augusta, SC: The GreenJackets (23-23) offense was unable to produce enough runs as they left 10 men-on-base, and they fell in the 3rd game of the series to the Rome Braves (23-24) by a final of 3-1. The Jackets will return tomorrow and try to earn a series split with the Braves.

After Shane Matheny and Mikey Edie had big nights the previous night, they got back to work in the 1st inning on Thursday evening. After Edie doubled, Matheny did the same, and the Jackets scored first to take a 1-0 advantage.
Rome responded off GreenJackets starter Keith Weisenberg in the 2nd inning. Henry Quintero delivered an RBI-single for the Braves, and the Jackets were all tied up with Rome.
Weisenberg played for Rome in 2018, and on Thursday he faced his old teammates as the starter for the GreenJackets. He ends his GreenJackets debut after three innings, allowing just one run. He was signed by the Giants to a minor league contract earlier in the week after being released by the Braves.
Rome scored a run in the 5th inning off reliever Preston White. Trey Harris singled to right field and gave Rome their first lead of the game at 2-1.
Justin Dean continued to cause problems for GreenJackets pitchers. After he reached base five times the previous night, Dean tripled to bring home a run in the 6th inning, and it extended the lead for Rome at 3-1. He finished with a 3-5 night at the plate, and was a home run away from the cycle.
Matt Seelinger made his debut on the mound out of the Jackets bullpen. He went two innings and did not allow a run, while striking-out three.
The GreenJackets were unable to socre in the 9th inning as it was a three-up, three-down inning for William Woods to earn his 1st save of the season. Alan Rangel picks-up the win on the mound for Rome going six innings while allowing only one run, and striking-out seven.
Player of the Game: Shane Matheny, 1-4, 2B, RBI
While Matheny struck out three times, his early double gave the Jackets a lead in the 1st inning. He has hits in back-to-back games now for the Jackets.
Tomorrow's Game:  7:05 PM vs Rome Braves (Atlanta Braves), SRP Park, North Augusta, South Carolina
Pitching Matchup: (ROM) RHP Gabriel Noguera (1-1, 5.63 ERA) vs (AUG) RHP Jesus Ozoria (0-2, 8.03 ERA)
PROMOTION: Children's Hospital of Georgia Sock Giveaway | Kid's Carnival Night
Jesus Ozoria will round out the rotation for the four-game series with Rome. Ozoria had a rough go-of-it in his last start. Against the RiverDogs on May 19th, Ozoria was unable to get through the 1st inning when he allowed three runs, while walking four. The GreenJackets ended up coming back and winning the game in extra-innings, but it was just 0.2 innings for Ozoria. The right hander was traded to the Giants for catcher Tom Murphy in March of 2019.
On the mound for Rome, it will be southpaw Gabriel Noguera. Noguera enters his 3rd season in the Braves organization. In 2018, he did not play after he was suspended for 50 games because of a 2nd positive test for a drug of abuse. In his 1st season in 2017, between the Dominican Summer League and Gulf Coast League, he posted a 1.58 ERA between the two.
