Royals Fall Late to Yankees

Atencio picks up three hits as Royals fall 5-1 in pitchers' duel

BURLINGTON, N.C.- The Burlington Royals and Pulaski Yankees traded zeroes for the first six innings of Thursday night's game at Burlington Athletic Stadium, but a late offensive outburst gave Pulaski a 5-1 series-clinching win.


Royals RHP Carlos Hernandez struck out a career-high nine batters over seven innings, scattering four hits and two walks. With the game still scoreless in the top of the seventh, he allowed a one-out single to Pulaski (32-15) SS Jesus Bastidas . Bastidas took second on a groundout and stole third. A balk call allowed him to score, giving the Yankees a 1-0 lead.


Burlington (21-27), who had been held in check by Yankees LHP Dalton Lehnen , was able to answer in the home half of the seventh. CF Cal Jones smacked a one-out single, and stole second. With one out, 3B Dennicher Carrasco hit a looping line drive to center field that fell in for an RBI single, scoring Jones.


The Yankees took the lead for good in the top of the eighth. 2B Eduardo Torrealba drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI double by 1B Eric Wagaman .


Pulaski added three ninth-inning insurance runs. Bastidas singled with one out, stole second, and scored on a double from 3B Yeison Corredera . Torrealba and CF Frederick Cuevas followed with doubles of their own, pushing the lead to 5-1.


Carrasco singled in the ninth for Burlington, but the Royals could not score.


C Jesus Atencio notched three hits for the Royals in the loss, and Carrasco singled twice.


The Royals will look to avoid a sweep on Friday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Andres Sotillet (3-2, 5.23 with AZL Royals and Idaho Falls) makes his Burlington debut against Yankees RHP Daniel Ramos (0-3, 4.86).
