Royals Open Series With Win at Yankees

Gigliotti drives in three; Rohlman, Matias collect three hits each in 9-7 win

PULASKI, VA.- The Burlington Royals scored runs in five of their nine offensive half-innings and pounded out 13 hits in a 9-7 road win over the Pulaski Yankees on Saturday night at Calfee Park. The win gave Burlington (8-13) three consecutive wins for the first time in the 2017 season.

CF Michael Gigliotti set the tone early for the Royals, leading off with a single in the first inning, advancing to second on SS Oliver Nunez 's single, and taking third on a wild pitch. He would score on a pickoff error, putting Burlington up 1-0.

In the second, C Sebastian Rivero reached on an error and 2B Jose Marquez walked to put two men on for Gigliotti. He promptly singled both runners home and the Royals led 3-0. RF Steven Sensley answered back for the Yankees (16-7) with a solo home run in the second, and Pulaski would take the lead with four runs in the third.

CF Pablo Olivares drove in Pulaski's first run in the third inning with a single, and Sensley gave the Yankees the lead with a two-RBI single. He would score himself on an error, giving Pulaski a two-run lead.

The Royals tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth. RF Seuly Matias and 1B Reed Rohlman hit back-to-back singles with one out, and Matias advanced to third on the latter single. 3B Dennicher Carrasco hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Matias, and LF Cal Jones doubled to drive in Rohlman.

LHP Michael Messier helped to keep the game at 5-5 into the top of the eighth. Messier struck out five in his relief outing, and his offense picked him up in the eighth. Carrasco reached on a leadoff error, and a Rivero single put men at the corners with one out. DH Nick Hutchins was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Marquez kept the line moving with an RBI single to put the Royals up 6-5. Gigliotti patiently drew a bases-loaded walk for a second run in the inning, which scored Rivero.

Sensley and the Yankees got one run back in the bottom of the inning. The Yankee right fielder walked, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from DH Brayan Emery .

Burlington's final two runs scored in the top of the ninth. Matias hit a leadoff single, stole second, and scored on a booming RBI triple from Rohlman. Carrasco stepped up and picked up his second sacrifice fly of the game to drive in Rohlman.

RHP Tyler Zuber entered for the Royals in the bottom of the ninth, and despite allowing an RBI single to 3B Dermis Garcia , locked down the victory.

Matias and Rohlman had three hits each for the Royals in the win, while Gigliotti and Rivero collected two apiece.
