BURLINGTON, N.C.- The Burlington Royals earned their second consecutive victory on Friday night, rallying past the Elizabethton Twins for a 5-3 triumph at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
Trailing 3-2 going to the bottom of the eight, the Royals (7-14) got a leadoff double from RF Seuly Matias, bringing 1B Dennicher Carrasco to the plate representing the go-ahead run. Carrasco promptly launched a two-run go-ahead homer over the left center field fence, his fifth long ball of the season. 3B Oliver Nunez walked and stole second, setting himself to score an insurance run on 2B Jose Marquez 's RBI single.
Although RHP Yerelmy Garcia walked two batters to begin the ninth, RHP Luis Alcantara struck out Twins (14-8) PH J.J. Robinson and induced a game-ending groundout off the bat of Twins 3B Ariel Montesino to preserve the win.
The ninth was the capper of a two-hit night for Royals pitching.
Royals RHP Sal Biasi was dominant to begin his outing, retiring the first 11 Twins he faced. Burlington provided him with run support on an unearned run in the bottom of the third. DH Ryan Dale reached on an error, and CF Michael Gigliotti followed with a single. A walk to SS Jeison Guzman loaded the bases, setting RF Seuly Matias up for an RBI groundout that plated Dale.
Elizabethton quickly took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth. LF Brent Rooker and 1B Kolton Kendrick each drew two-out walks, and DH Colton Waltner laced a two-RBI double to the left-center field gap.
Biasi would finish his night having thrown five innings of one-hit ball, striking out two.
The Twins' second hit and next scoring opportunity came in the top of the sixth. Kendrick and Waltner each walked with two out, and CF Mark Contreras hit a sharp single up the middle to drive in Kendrick. Burlington answered back in the bottom of the inning thanks to a mis-play by Contreras in center field. Carrasco led off with a triple when Contreras lost a ball in the lights, and he would score on an RBI groundout from LF Travis Jones to make it 3-2.
Garcia kept the Twins off the board in the seventh and eighth, setting up the Royals' rally and earning his first win of the season.
Carrasco was the lone Royal with multiple hits on the night.
The Royals open a three-game road set with the Pulaski Yankees on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Nathan Webb (1-3, 7.36) starts for the Royals.
