Burlington (8-15) answered with both of their runs in the top of the third. 2B Oliver Nunez began the inning with a single and promptly stole second. CF Michael Gigliotti singled to put men at the corners with no out. Gigliotti also stole second, and SS Jeison Guzman reached on an error that allowed Nunez to score to tie the game. Another error on a pickoff try sent Gigliotti home and gave the Royals a 2-1 lead.

RHP Connor Mayes worked a solid 4.1 innings for the Royals, striking out a batter. LHP Felix Familia followed Mayes, and fanned three over 2.2 shutout frames.

Later in the inning, 3B Andres Chaparro singled and moved up to second when C Saul Torres was hit by a pitch. An error allowed Chaparro to score and give the Yankees an insurance run.
