The New Orleans Baby Cakes mounted a three-run rally to snap a sixth-inning tie and went on to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Friday night, 4-1.
With the game tied 1-1, Steve Lombardozzi doubled into the right-center field gap and advanced to third on a two-out infield single by Mike Aviles before Brandon Barnes ripped a single up the middle to put the Baby Cakes in front.
Cal Towey followed with a double over the head of left fielder Kyle Wren to score a pair and boost the New Orleans lead to three runs.
'Cakes starter Scott Copeland scattered nine hits across 5 2/3 innings, but held the Sky Sox at bay by allowing two hits in 11 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Copeland induced 13 ground ball outs, but was pulled after surrendering a two-out double to opposing pitcher Michael Blazek in the sixth.
Victor Payano (3-2) came on to strike out Wren to end the inning, and added a hitless seventh in earning the victory. Hunter Cervenka chipped in a shutout eighth inning before Drew Steckenrider struck out the side in the ninth to record his fourth save.
The lone Colorado Springs run scored in the third after Ivan DeJesus, Jr. singled, moved to third on a double by Ryan Cordell, and trotted home on Garrett Cooper's ground out.
New Orleans evened things in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Aviles to cash in Lombardozzi's leadoff single. Lombardozzi finished with his second multi-hit effort in as many games since returning from the disabled list.
Blazek (1-2) was charged with four runs on six hits in six innings to take the loss for Colorado Springs.
The 'Cakes and Sox continue the four-game set on Saturday at 6 p.m.
